Popular actriz de los años treinta en que hizo pareja con William Powell, en una serie de divertidas comedias como una pareja de detectives. Apareció en la primer película sincronizada con sonido que fue “Don Juan” y en la primera en que hubo diálogos “El cantante de Jazz”. Los publicistas de la MGM, en los años treinta, la llamaron la “Reina de Hollywood”, al lado de Clark Gable que se le conoció como “El Rey”. Se inició como una exótica o mujer fatal en el cine, a mediados de los años veinte, pero, afortunadamente, pronto se dieron cuenta de su capacidad para la comedia, donde se estableció como una de las grandes comediantes de la MGM.
